Sheffield Wednesday Sign Man United’s Harry Amass — But United Covered It All

Sheffield Wednesday have finally secured a signing — and it’s a highly rated young defender from Manchester United. But fans are quick to point out that this move says more about the Owls’ off-field problems than any transfer masterclass.

Harry Amass joins the club on loan, but make no mistake — this deal is all down to Man Utd’s persistence, not Wednesday’s pulling power.

Overview

18-year-old Harry Amass, one of Manchester United’s brightest young full-backs, has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan — in a move that’s raised eyebrows for all the right (and wrong) reasons.

After weeks of tension over the club’s transfer inactivity, Amass becomes the only outfield player brought in during the window — and it’s believed United had to push hard behind the scenes to get this one over the line.

Even more telling? United are reportedly covering everything — from wages to accommodation. That’s how keen they were to get the England youth international valuable minutes — and how restricted Wednesday are under Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.

What You Need to Know

  • Harry Amass has joined Sheffield Wednesday on loan from Manchester United.
  • United are covering all financial aspects of the loan: wages, travel, bonuses, accommodation.
  • The EFL approved the deal after being satisfied Amass would be properly looked after.
  • No fee was involved — and the deal came together due to United’s insistence.
  • Amass is Wednesday’s only non-emergency addition of the summer.

Key Talking Points

  • Amass breaks silence:
“The hard work continues… can’t wait to get started,” the youngster posted on Instagram.
  • Man Utd do the work:
Reports suggest United handled negotiations with the EFL directly and covered all costs to make it happen.
  • EFL not the problem:
Despite fan frustration at the league, this deal shows the EFL were willing to approve signings — provided proper financial documentation was in place.
  • Chansiri under fire again:
The lack of transfer activity has once again turned the spotlight on the club owner’s handling of finances and governance.
  • Reality check for Wednesday:
One outfield signing, thanks to another club’s effort, highlights just how far the club has fallen.

Our Take

Harry Amass coming to us is all down to Manchester United — let’s not pretend otherwise. Chansiri played no part in getting this young lad through the door.

United were so eager to get Amass out on loan that they’re picking up the bill for everything — wages, bonuses, travel, accommodation… the lot! (Okay, maybe not literally everything, but you get the point.)

Yes, credit to Pedersen and the club staff, but at the end of the day this only happened because United made it happen — and the EFL were convinced he’d be looked after properly. Some fans keep pointing fingers at the EFL, but the blame lies with one man: Chansiri.

Let’s be honest — we all knew this window would be a write-off. The fact it took a top Premier League club to force through one signing says everything about where we are. The EFL weren’t blocking players — they just needed proof of funds. Some reckon we could’ve brought in 10 players, including free agents who’d been training with us.

Still… at least one made it in. And no, we’re not counting Horvath — he’s an emergency loan. Doesn’t count.

One young loanee brought in thanks to Manchester United’s persistence — that’s where we’re at. Is this the wake-up call Chansiri needs, or just more proof he won’t change?

What do you make of the Amass deal — and does it prove the EFL aren’t to blame?
