Anger Growing Online as Wednesday Remain Unable to Sign Players

As of Sunday 31st August 2025 at 7:30pm, Sheffield Wednesday remain unable to register any new players — not even on loan. Reports suggest Manchester United were prepared to send highly-rated youngster Harry Amass to Hillsborough, covering his wages and without demanding a loan fee, yet the EFL still refused approval. The reason? Chairman Dejphon Chansiri has still not met the requirements set out by the league.

So, what exactly are those requirements? In simple terms, the EFL are asking Chansiri to provide proof of funds — evidence that he can sustain the running of the club. This isn’t about complex hurdles or “jumping through hoops,” it’s about showing financial stability.

Fan reaction online has been mixed. For some, the EFL’s stance is welcome, seen as yet another blow to Chansiri’s already battered credibility. Others, however, are disappointed and frustrated, pointing out that the squad urgently needs reinforcements.

Another issue highlighted is that the restrictions also prevent any “sale and loan-back” deals. For example, if Wednesday were to sell promising forward Bailey Cadamarteri, he could not immediately return on loan. That could explain why Chansiri rejected Blackburn Rovers’ reported £1 million bid.

This continued deadlock is fuelling anger on social media. Some supporters are calling for stronger protests inside the stadium — including pitch invasions — believing relegation is already inevitable. Their logic is that fines would add more pressure on Chansiri, forcing his hand.

There are also renewed calls for the EFL to reassess Chansiri’s ownership through a fresh fit-and-proper test. The argument is simple: if he cannot prove he has the funds to meet current requirements, how can he realistically finance the club’s future? For now, the EFL have given no indication they will revisit this.

The bottom line remains clear: Chansiri needs to sell. Until he does, 90% of Sheffield Wednesday’s problems will persist. Fans know it, the EFL know it — and every day that passes without action only deepens the frustration.
