It’s been heavily reported today across mainstream media — from Sky Sports to The Sun — that Sheffield Wednesday are set to be hit with a points deduction. But for most fans, this isn’t new or surprising news.
The issue? Yet again, the club has failed to meet its wage obligations to senior players, marking the fifth time in seven months that wages haven’t been paid on time.
This continued failure has triggered a breach of the EFL’s financial regulations, and now, the consequences are very real.
What’s Happened?
- Sheffield Wednesday failed to pay senior players by the September 30 deadline.
- Youth team players and some admin staff were paid, but first-team players were not.
- This is the fifth time in seven months that wages have been paid late.
- The EFL will refer the matter to an independent commission, which will determine the punishment.
- A points deduction in the Championship is now considered the most likely outcome.
- Some believe the deduction could be significant — potentially season-ending in scale.
Our Take
While this story is doing the rounds again today — Sky Sports, The Sun, social media and more — the truth is, this isn’t something new or something we didn’t already expect.
Most Wednesday fans have had a gut feeling that a points deduction was coming for a while. Back at the start of the season, there were rumblings of a massive deduction, something in the range of 18 to 20 points. Something that would all but guarantee relegation and completely ruin the season before it had even begun.
Now fast-forward a few months, and we’re still in limbo — no official points deduction yet, but everything continues to move in that direction.
Here’s what I honestly think: the EFL have been holding off because they expected a sale to go through. Maybe they thought, “Let’s wait and see who takes over. Maybe things will stabilise.” But now it’s becoming clear that a takeover isn’t close. Once again, it feels like nothing is changing.
And then there’s Chansiri. The man seems completely detached from reality. I truly believe he thinks he can keep avoiding bills, wages, maintenance, responsibilities — and that there’ll be no real consequence. But this path he’s taking us down is the quickest route back to League One.
When the deduction finally drops — and let’s be honest, it will — that could be our season finished. There’s no way we claw our way back from a potential -18 or more. Unless something drastic changes at the top, we’re heading for disaster.
What do you think the punishment will be — and can we survive it?
