The Wednesday ’Til I Die podcast has gone from strength to strength since its humble beginnings. Now in 2025, podcasts have become a huge part of modern football culture — and for Sheffield Wednesday fans, this one has become a staple. Whether you’re tuning in after a big win, a tough loss, or during the many twists and turns of the Owls’ journey, chances are you’ve listened to James and the team share their thoughts.

We got in touch with James from the Wednesday ‘Til I Die podcast and asked him a few questions:

When did the podcast officially launch — and why Sheffield Wednesday?

The podcast launched in January 2021, during the height of lockdown. Like many, James was looking for something to keep himself busy and found inspiration from other podcasts he was listening to at the time.

“I’d never done anything like this before,” he said. “But I’m a lifelong Wednesday fan — it runs in the family — so it made total sense to start something focused on the club.”

You’re widely regarded as the #1 podcast for Wednesday fans — how does that feel?

“To be regarded that way is great and makes me proud,” James said. “But what makes me happiest is that people actually enjoy the content and want to listen every week.”

The show now produces four episodes a week and even has a membership option for fans who want more. James explained that a lot of the feedback reflects the relaxed and relatable style: “It’s just two mates having a chat down the pub about Wednesday — and that’s a real compliment.”

What’s been your favourite moment or episode so far?

Two moments stand out:

  • The Peterborough comeback game in the League One play-off semi-final — “People still go back and listen to that episode,” James noted.
  • And of course, beating Barnsley at Wembley in the final moments of the play-off final. “The emotions of that day were just unreal. I’d travelled up from Cornwall to be there — and then had to go straight back — but it was all worth it.”

Have you seen the podcasting landscape shift since you started?

“When we first started, we were audio only — now it’s all about video,” James said. “Even though most of our listeners are probably still audio-based, the shift has been huge.”

He admitted that the transition from audio to video isn’t always straightforward: “Once you start producing video content, there are so many more moving parts. It’s totally different from when we started out.”

Have any players or club staff ever reached out about the show?

They’ve had a few ex-players on the podcast, which James describes as “fantastic” for the insight they can provide. But he added that currently, there’s a club-wide block on getting players or staff involved — something he understands completely.

“We’ve had the odd negative comment, but that’s fine. We just give our honest opinions, whether things are going well or not.”

What’s the feedback from listeners meant to you — especially during highs and lows?

“The early days were tough,” James admitted. “I wasn’t used to putting myself out there, and you do get some stick — but that’s football. Everyone has their own opinions and that’s the beauty of it.”

One of the most touching moments came from fans who opened up about how the podcast helped them with mental health challenges.

“Especially with everything we’ve been going through as a club recently, people have said the podcast helped them. That means a lot. I’m proud that it’s had that kind of impact.”

What’s next for the podcast?

Looking ahead, James hopes to host a live event — something with a sit-down audience and a few guests.

“It would be amazing to create a dedicated fan channel for Sheffield Wednesday — with daily episodes and content fans can enjoy.”

And finally, James added:

“I’m very thankful for all the ongoing support and comments from the fans. It’s enabling me to do this — so I can only be grateful to everyone who listens and takes part.”
