EFL Plans to Expand Championship Play-Offs to Six Teams Sparks Debate

There’s fresh talk of a potential shake-up in the Championship play-off structure, with reports suggesting the EFL is considering expanding the play-off spots from four to six.

That means clubs finishing 7th and 8th could be in with a shot at promotion to the Premier League.

But is this a genuine attempt to make the league more competitive, or is there something more commercial behind the idea?

What You Need to Know

  • The current play-off system sees teams finishing 3rd to 6th battle it out for the final promotion spot.
  • Under the proposed new structure, 7th and 8th place would also qualify.
  • The move is reportedly being discussed across the league, with initial support from some club officials and league insiders.
  • This isn’t the first time such a change has been floated – but it feels like momentum is building again.

Key Talking Points

  • Could this create more fan engagement, or just more chaos?
  • There’s concern this could lead to a team finishing 30 points behind 3rd place going up.
  • Critics argue it would devalue the 46-game season.
  • Some believe it’s driven more by TV money and sponsorship than sporting merit.
  • The current system already includes drama — is more really needed?

Our Take

This isn’t something new, suggestions like this have been floating around for a few years and nothing ever really seems to come of them.

In our view? It’s not a great idea.

As others have already said, what happens when a team finishes 30 points behind 3rd place, sneaks into the play-offs in 8th, then somehow gets promoted? That same team will likely finish rock bottom in the Premier League next season, so what’s the point?

Sure, people will say it gives more teams a chance at promotion, but clubs should be aiming to earn that chance across the season. Improve your squad, invest in infrastructure, and push up the table. That’s the whole point of the Championship grind.

We all remember when we got promoted from League One via the play-offs, record points total, didn’t go up automatically, but had our moment of magic at Wembley. That was earned.

This feels more like a tournament than a league now. You’re basically turning a 46-game season into a pre-qualifier for a knockout event. It might be fun, but is it fair?

Also, let’s not kid ourselves: this could be all about money. More games = more cash. That’s what the EFL and its partners care about most. With the financial mess many clubs are in (and yes, we know all about that…), this could be just another way to boost revenue and generate more headlines.

Right now, we don’t think it’s a good idea. But it’s not up to the fans.

Let’s see if this one sticks, or if it ends up on the pile of failed ideas like so many others before it.

It’s still only being discussed, but if this gets pushed through, it could change the Championship forever.

Would you be in favour of expanding the play-offs — or does it just ruin the whole point of the season?
