Confusion Grows Over Sky Sports’ Sheffield Wednesday Takeover Report

A report from Sky Sports caused a stir online today, sparking confusion over the status of Sheffield Wednesday’s administration process — and whether any serious talks have actually taken place. But within minutes, other journalists weighed in with very different information. So, what’s really going on?

Earlier today, Sky Sports News posted on X (formerly Twitter) stating that the administrators currently handling Sheffield Wednesday’s affairs had not spoken to any interested parties about buying the club. The post also claimed, via an unnamed source, that any bidder who publicly expresses interest is “not a serious bidder.”

However, just moments later, respected journalist Rob Staton posted a directly contradictory update. According to his sources, the administrators have spoken to many parties — with interest reportedly stretching into double figures.

This was then backed up by Alex Miller, who echoed that several conversations have taken place already — and that we’re still in the early stages of the process.

Our Take

Let’s be honest — the post from Sky Sports was bizarre. Not only was it oddly timed, but the suggestion that “anyone who makes their interest public isn’t a serious bidder” feels unnecessarily dismissive.

From the moment Sheffield Wednesday entered administration, fans were told that interested parties had already come forward. Why would the administrators not have spoken to anyone at all? It’s been over a week now, and even basic due diligence would require conversations with some potential buyers.

In fact, John Textor himself has stated (in an interview with Alan MyersLink to Alan Myers) that he had spoken to the administrators, which directly contradicts Sky’s claim.

It’s just a very odd time for Sky Sports to drop a line like that — especially when others with close ties to the club are suggesting the opposite is true.

So who’s got it right — Sky Sports or the local journalists with deeper connections to the story? Either way, the mixed messaging isn’t helpful for fans hoping for transparency in a critical period for the club. Do you think the national media is being fed a different narrative, or was this just poor reporting?
